The question of whether governments ought to invest heavily in space exploration or redirect those funds towards pressing domestic issues is a contentious one. While I appreciate the value of cosmic discovery, I ultimately believe that human needs on our own planet should take priority. Those who support generous space budgets present compelling arguments. Firstly, space research has produced countless technological breakthroughs that benefit everyday life, from satellite communication and weather forecasting to medical imaging devices. Many innovations now considered ordinary originated in programmes designed for the stars. Secondly, exploring other worlds may prove essential for humanity's long-term survival, whether by identifying resources, monitoring asteroid threats, or eventually establishing settlements beyond Earth. Supporters therefore view space funding as an investment in the future rather than a luxury. Nevertheless, critics raise equally persuasive points. Millions of people still lack clean water, adequate healthcare, and basic education, and the enormous sums devoted to rockets and probes could transform these lives. When children die from preventable diseases, spending billions to land robots on distant planets can seem morally indefensible. Furthermore, problems such as climate change and poverty are immediate and certain, whereas the rewards of space exploration are often distant and speculative. In my opinion, governments should strike a careful balance, but with a clear emphasis on earthly priorities. Modest, well-targeted space programmes that yield practical benefits are worthwhile, yet the bulk of public money should address suffering and inequality that exist today. Solving urgent human problems first creates the stable, prosperous foundation from which ambitious space ventures can eventually flourish. Caring for our own planet, after all, must come before reaching for the heavens.
