The question of whether public transport should be free for everyone, with the cost covered by taxation, has become increasingly relevant as cities struggle with congestion and pollution. While some insist that fares are necessary, others champion free access. In my view, free public transport offers significant benefits, although it must be carefully funded. Those who support free transport point to clear social and environmental advantages. When buses and trains cost nothing, more people are encouraged to leave their cars at home, which reduces traffic jams and harmful emissions. This is particularly valuable in large, polluted cities. Furthermore, free transport helps low-income citizens, students and the elderly, who often spend a disproportionate share of their income on travel. In this way, the policy promotes greater equality and improves access to jobs and education. On the other hand, opponents argue that fares are essential for maintaining quality and reliability. Ticket revenue helps fund maintenance, new vehicles and staff salaries. If this income disappears, the burden falls entirely on taxpayers, including those who never use public transport. Critics also fear that overcrowding could worsen if services become free, lowering comfort and discouraging regular passengers. Weighing both arguments, I believe the environmental and social gains outweigh the drawbacks. The financial concern is genuine but manageable; governments could fund free transport by redirecting subsidies from road building or by taxing private car use. Cities such as Tallinn in Estonia have shown that free transport can operate successfully without collapsing. In conclusion, although fare-free transport requires sustainable funding, its benefits for the environment and for disadvantaged groups make it a worthwhile policy that governments should seriously consider.
