Academic Task 1: The chart below shows the percentage of school leavers in one country who took a gap year before university, broken down by their main activity, in 2010 and 2023. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart compares the main activities of school leavers who chose to take a gap year before starting university in 2010 and 2023, measured as percentages. Overall, the most striking change is the dramatic rise in internships, while travelling abroad and paid work, which dominated in 2010, became less popular over the period. Volunteering also grew modestly. In 2010, travelling abroad was the leading activity, accounting for 34% of gap-year students, followed by paid work at 28%. By 2023, however, both had fallen, to 26% and 22% respectively. In contrast, internships saw a remarkable increase, jumping from just 9% to 24% and almost matching travel as the top choice. Volunteering rose slightly from 18% to 21%, making it broadly comparable to paid work in 2023. Meanwhile, the proportion engaged in other activities declined from 11% to 7%, the smallest category in both years.

The decision of whether to take a gap year before university or to enrol immediately is one that many young people face. While some argue that a break offers valuable life experience, others maintain that continuing directly into higher education is more sensible. In my view, a gap year can be highly beneficial provided it is spent purposefully. Those who favour going straight to university point to academic momentum. After years of study, students are accustomed to learning routines, and a long break may make it harder to readjust to demanding coursework. Furthermore, beginning university without delay allows graduates to enter the workforce sooner, which can be financially advantageous. Some parents also worry that an unstructured year may lead young people to lose focus altogether. On the other hand, supporters of gap years emphasise personal growth. Travelling, volunteering, or working can develop independence, maturity, and intercultural awareness that classrooms rarely provide. Many students also use the time to clarify their career goals, meaning they choose degrees more wisely and are more motivated once they begin. Employers, moreover, increasingly value the practical skills and confidence gained during such experiences. In my opinion, the value of a gap year depends entirely on how it is used. A year wasted on idleness offers little, but one filled with meaningful work, travel, or service can transform an immature school leaver into a focused, capable adult. In conclusion, although attending university immediately has clear practical merits, I believe a well-planned gap year provides advantages that often outweigh the risks of a temporary delay.
