Section 1

You will hear a conversation between a bakery manager and an applicant during a job interview.
Manager: Good morning, thanks for coming in. Please take a seat. You're Daniel, is that right?
Daniel: Yes, that's right. Daniel Whitfield. Thank you for inviting me.
Manager: No problem. So, you applied for the part-time assistant baker position. Let me just confirm a few details. Could you spell your surname for me?
Daniel: Of course, it's W-H-I-T-F-I-E-L-D.
Manager: Great. And your contact number?
Daniel: It's 0789 442 6135.
Manager: Perfect. Now, tell me, do you have any previous experience in a bakery?
Daniel: Yes, I worked for two years at a small cafe where I helped prepare bread and pastries every morning. Before that, I completed a six-month course in patisserie.
Manager: That's excellent. Patisserie is one of our specialities. We're particularly known for our croissants and our fruit tarts. What would you say is your strongest skill?
Daniel: I'd say decorating. I really enjoy the detailed work, especially icing cakes for special occasions.
Manager: Good to hear. Now, the position requires early starts. Our bakers usually begin work at half past four in the morning. Would that be a problem for you?
Daniel: Not at all. I'm an early riser, and I actually prefer working in the quiet morning hours.
Manager: That's the right attitude. The shift runs until around midday, so you'd finish at about one o'clock. The role is for five days a week, with Sundays and Mondays off.
Daniel: That suits me very well.
Manager: Let's talk about pay. We offer twelve pounds fifty per hour to start, and after a three-month probation period, that rises to fourteen pounds. There's also a staff discount of forty percent on all products.
Daniel: That sounds very fair.
Manager: We also provide a uniform, which includes an apron and a hat, but you'll need to bring your own comfortable shoes. Safety is important in the kitchen, so non-slip shoes are essential.
Daniel: Understood. I have a suitable pair already.
Manager: One more thing. We ask all new staff to attend a training day before they begin. It covers hygiene standards and how to use our equipment. The next one is on the fifteenth of June.
Daniel: I'm available that day, no problem.
Manager: Wonderful. Do you have any questions for me?
Daniel: Yes, just one. Is there any opportunity to learn new recipes while working here?
Manager: Absolutely. We encourage our staff to develop, and our head baker runs monthly workshops where you can learn new techniques.
Daniel: That's great to hear. Thank you.
Manager: Thank you, Daniel. We'll be in touch by email within the week to let you know our decision.
